Overview
Considerable weight loss and pregnancy can weaken the abdominal muscles, which can lead to loose, sagging skin around the midsection area, creating an unpleasing appearance. Several other causes that make the tummy bulge out are aging, previous surgery, or heredity. When abdominal fat does not respond to your diet or exercise, you should consider tummy tuck surgery. This procedure is not a weight loss procedure; it is a procedure that removes excess stubborn fat to enhance the shape of the abdomen.
What is Tummy Tuck?
Tummy tuck or “Abdominoplasty” is a cosmetic surgery procedure used to improve the shape of the abdomen by making it thinner and firmer. The surgery involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen to tighten the muscle and fascia of the abdominal wall. It removes excess skin and fat around the stomach while tightening the abdominal wall. It is generally performed after pregnancy or weight loss when the skin becomes stretched or saggy. A new belly button may need to be surgically created by a procedure known as umbilicoplasty.
Who is a Good Candidate?
If you have any or some of the underlying conditions, you may consider this procedure:
- Excess or sagging abdominal skin.
- A protruding abdomen that is out of proportion to the rest of your body.
- Abdominal muscles that have been separated and weekend.
- Excessive fatty tissue that is concentrated in your abdomen.
Types of Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
The procedures vary in scope and are frequently subdivided into various categories:
Complete Abdominoplasty
- An incision is made from hipbone to hipbone, just above the pubic area.
- One more incision is made to free the umbilicus from the surrounding skin.
- The skin is separated from the abdominal wall to expose the muscles and fascia to be tightened. The muscle fascia wall is tightened with sutures.
- Liposuction is often used to refine the transition zones of the abdominal sculpture.
- A dressing and a compression garment are applied.
- A complete abdominoplasty can take from 1 to 5 hours.
Partial (Mini Tummy Tuck) Abdominoplasty
A partial or mini abdominoplasty proceeds:
- A smaller incision is made.
- The skin and fat of the lower abdomen are detached in a more limited fashion from the muscle fascia. The skin is stretched downwards, and excess skin is removed.
- Sometimes the belly button base is divided from the muscle below and slides down lower on the abdominal wall.
- Sometimes a portion of the abdominal muscle fascia wall is tightened.
- Liposuction is often used to contour the transition zone.
- The flap is stitched back into place.
- A partial abdominoplasty (mini-tuck ) can be completed in 1 to 2 hours.
Extended Tummy Tuck
This procedure should be chosen if you have excess fat in your lower back. This procedure is recommended to address excessive loose skin after pregnancy or weight loss.
Circumferential Tummy Tuck
It removes excess skin and fat around the waistline, buttocks, hips, and thighs.
Other procedures, such as Liposuction or breast augmentation, are often performed at the same time. This is commonly referred to as a mommy makeover.
Recovery After The Surgery
- The Patient can go home the next day after the procedure.
- Take rest for a few days after the surgery.
- Wear loose and comfortable clothes.
- Do not smoke.
- You can get back to work after 2-4 weeks.
- Regular consultation with the doctor.
- Follow all the instructions given by the surgeon for early recovery.
