Causes of Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate

Causes of Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate

The causes of cleft deformities are complex and include a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Even though the cause cannot be identified, studies have indicated that several factors are responsible for this condition:

  • Genetics: A family history of cleft lip or palate will increase the risk of such conditions. Having a brother or sister, or even a parent, with a cleft will raise the risk of future offspring.
  • Environmental Factors: When the mother is exposed to certain substances during pregnancy, such as tobacco, alcohol, or any medication, it may raise the risk.
  • Syndromes: In certain instances, cleft lip and palate can be associated with a genetic syndrome, such as Pierre Robin sequence or Treacher Collins syndrome, that can include other congenital anomalies.
  • Ethnicity: There are certain ethnic groups, such as Asians, Native Americans, and Hispanics, who have a higher prevalence of clefts than others.
