Medical Treatments for Male and Female Hair Loss India
Hair Loss Treatment for Men & Women
Different people have different expectations from Hair loss treatment. Many people think that Hair Transplant means medical treatment & yet another think that it is same as putting a wig. As a Hair Restoration physician it is our duty to guide you about the complete range of treatments for hair loss:
Firstly, it should be understood that hair transplantation is an out-patient, surgical procedure performed by licensed surgeons and experienced team, that move individual hair follicles from a part of your body, known as the ‘donor site’, and implanting it on a balding part of your body, which is the ‘recipient site’. We usually take hair follicles from back of the head, also known as “Occipital region” and transfer it to the top of your head (Bald area). This procedure is performed under a local anesthesia and is minimally invasive. The duration of surgery may vary from 4-8 hours depending on the number of grafts to be transplanted. Hair actually grows in a group of one to four hairs, known as follicular unit.
In hair transplant we transplant these follicular units by either FUE or FUT. This state-of-the-art transplantation technique achieves a natural appearance, one that looks identical to how your hairs used to look. This is what we’re known for around the world and why our hair loss treatment for men and women is considered by many experts to be the best around.
This is the most effective way to restore hair loss in the advanced stages of balding for both men and women. Hair transplant helps when receding hairlines or thinning hair has become an issue. For those suffering from genetic hair loss, such as male and female pattern baldness, other hair loss prevention treatments might slow down the hair loss but they cannot combat it entirely. In fact, of all the hair loss remedies available out there, hair transplantation is the only known solution to permanently restore hair. Success rates may vary from an individual to another, but hair transplantation is most often the final option for many suffering from hair loss. Aside from surgical hair transplantation, for those that are looking for a shorter term hair loss remedy, there are medically-approved options:
- Oral Medication (Finasteride)
This medication works for both men and women. It has received approval from the FDA to treat male pattern hair loss. The medication’s effectiveness depends upon the type of hair loss and its location. Finasteride does not work well on receding hairlines. Also, men who are already “shiny bald” are unlikely to have positive results because the hair follicles may not be salvageable. Men who have moderate thinning in the back or top of the head have a better chance of obtaining some visible benefit, but only for as long as they continue taking the medication.
- Topical Hair Solution (Minoxidil)
This solution works for both men and women. The only direct hair growth stimulator currently FDA-approved for hair loss is topical minoxidil. It comes under common names such as Mintop lotion or Amexidil sprays. It works to some degree in most patients. A 5 percent solution, foam and spray have been approved for men and a 2 percent solution for women and men. Using the drug is simple: twice a day you apply a liquid or foam to your scalp. The one drawback is that if you stop using the treatment, any benefits achieved from this particular hair loss treatment for men will eventually be lost. You have to stay with it or your hair will revert to its previous loss pattern.
- Oral Multivitamins
Oral Multivitamins are also prescribed to you to be taken on a regular basis.
Mesotherapy in Hair Loss
Mesotherapy literally means injecting something in the mesoderm. Initially being used rampantly for fat reduction (lipolysis), it came into use for hair loss treatment too.
Scientific basis for Mesotherapy
To provide nourishment in the form of vitamin boosters and growth factors to hair roots to increase the rate of hair growth, also transforming the weak roots to healthy ones for production of healthy hair. Quality of hair is also aimed to be made better by the various cocktails of serums used.
How to give mesotherapy?
Nappage technique – done by a one ml insulin syringe. Various growth factor, hair vitalisers, vitamins such as biotin, vit H etc are deposited in the scalp near the hair roots in a shorter span of time within a larger area.
Papular technique – a bit painful and so anaesthetic gel may be applied before ( the doctor will tell you the protocols as well as the procedures). It’s a very good technique of depositing the serums, vitamins etc in a bolus amount adjacent to the hair roots.
After dermarollers – those basic serums and solutions only which are used in nappage and papular techniques are applied to the scalp after the procedure of dermarollers as explained below.
Dermarollers in Hair Loss
Dermarollers are actually microneedles on smalls roller tools. The length of these needles vary from 0.25 mm to 2.00 mm. When used in the condition of hairloss (thinning of hair) the 0.5 or 0.75 mm rollers are used over the scalp with determined direction and hold.
The microneedling triggers hair growth by physical mechanism as well as by the special cocktails of serums and vitamins which are applied after the rollers are done.
Laser Therapy (igrow) The laser comb or Laser cap is the first and only home-use medical laser device that has been clinically proven and FDA cleared, for men and women, to stimulate your scalp and promote hair growth. The device is a hand-held instrument that you’ll need to use for 10-15 minutes a day, three times a week. It’s cordless and has easy-to- use features providing the convenience of a hair restoration for men program in your own home.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
How PRP works
Patients who are good candidates for Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection want to prevent continuing hair loss, and are currently experiencing a lot of miniaturized (thinned out) hair.
A non-surgical solution for hair restoration, PRP is not a pharmaceutical or a drug, but a Medical Device sanctioned by the FDA for use in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Structurally, PRP is a biomatrix that repairs and remodels damaged tissue.
In hair restoration, PRP is injected into the scalp. The application of PRP causes miniaturized hair follicles to become healthier and larger, producing more robust hair growth. PRP activates follicular progenitor cells (adult stem cells) and PRP is loaded with growth factors that promote rapid angiogenesis and localized cell growth. Effective for both male and female pattern hair loss, PRP has also regrown hair in alopecia area, eyebrow hypotrichosis and other patient cases with non-hereditary hair loss.
The recovery from PRP therapy is typically uneventful. Pain is easily managed in most cases with non-narcotic analgesic medication such as Ibuprofen. Some mild swelling of the forehead is occasionally seen 4-6 hours after PRP injections. This is normal and will resolve in 48 hours. Avoiding vigorous activity is recommended until the swelling is gone. There is no other downtime or noticeable effects of the procedure. Patients can wash their hair normally immediately after the injections. PRP treatment takes about 80 minutes to complete. First, a blood sample is obtained which is specially processed to produce the PRP. A local anesthetic is then administered to completely numb the scalp treatment area. If desired, a sedative can be administered. The PRP are combined and then administered via a series of injections over the full scalp or in a localized treatment area such as the eyebrows or beard.
New hair growth can be seen as early as 2 months, but is typically evident between 5-8 months and will continue to improve up to a year after treatment. At Saraswat Hospital, PRP therapy is a versatile tool in the treatment of hair loss for a number of causes including:
- Male Pattern Hair Loss are especially in the early stages of balding,or anytime there is a lot of miniaturized hair on the scalp. 3-6 sittings are recommended at an interval of 1 month each.
- Female Pattern Hair Loss are at all stages of hair loss
- Hypotrichosis (fine/reduced hairs) of the eyebrows or beard
- Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis
- After Hair Transplant
- Due to metabolic reasons and iron deficiency anemia.
