Want to wipe away those terrible acne scars? Try dermabrasion. Carried out by a dermatological surgeon, dermabrasion is a cosmetic medical procedure to enhance appearance through controlled surgical wearing away (scraping). It is used in the treatment or removal of:
- Facial wrinkles
- Acne scars
- Dark spots
- Pox marks
- Age spots
- Skin lesions
- Accident caused scars
In dermabrasion, an antiseptic is first used to clean the affected region. This is followed by the application of a unique spray on the skin to freeze it. The skin is then abraded using a speedy rotary instrument having a brush or abrasive wheel. A superficial wound is created, outer skin layers are removed, and skin surface irregularities are made better. The wound is made in such a way as to not only get rid of the scar but also to enable the development of fresh skin in the normal way.
Dermabrasion is most often used to improve the look of facial skin left scarred by acne, accidents or previous surgery, or to smooth out wrinkles on the face, such as those around the eyes and mouth.
It is a surgical procedure used to “refinish” skin so that any irregularities on the surface of the skin are smoothened out. Dermabrasion involves removing the surface layers of skin using diamond bush. On the day of the procedure, dressings have to be applied on the areas.
The operation is done using local anesthetic with sedatives, or even general anesthesia. After the procedure, skin may feel sensitive for sometime and recovery takes about 10 days.
